John Locke

of Aylesbury, Buckinhamshire

1825-1889

 

John Locke was born in Aylesbury on 23rd March, 1823, the son of William Speed Locke (15th February, 1796 -8th August, 1873) and Phebe Wilgoss (28th April, 1792 - 3rd September, 1828).

He married Caroline Gibbs (3rd October, 1825 - 10th January 1898), the daughter of John Gibbs (19th May, 1792 - 10th March, 1860) and Mary Rolls (30th March, 1787 - 19th April, 1853) at Hale Leys Chapel, Aylesbury on 6th September 1849

He lived in Aylesbury all his life and died on 18th October, 1889.

John Locke and his wife Caroline Gibbs had a very large family

  1. Eliza Mary Locke (15 June, 1850 - 30 May 1936). Lived in Aylesbury all her life and ran, with her sisters, a boarding school in Temple Square, Aylesbury. Never married.

  2. John Locke (1 June, 1851 - 6 May 1854)

  3. Henry Locke (17 May, 1852 - 1916) Lived in Aylesbury, married Ellen Elmes nee Hill (1838 - ????), and had one son. Living descendants.

  4. George Locke (1 July, 1853 - 19 November 1946) Became a medical doctor in Hastings. Married Elsie Elizabeth Millar Grace (7th February, 1860 - 30th October, 1927) and had 5 children. Line extinct

  5. Caroline Locke (26 July, 1854 - 11 December 1934). Lived in Aylesbury all her life and ran, with her sisters, a boarding school in Temple Square, Aylesbury Never married.

  6. Arthur Charles Locke (28 November, 1855 - 1908). Coal Merchant in Thame (as Locke Brothers). Married Jane Bowler (1854/5 - 6th July, 1926) and had 6 children: Living Descendants.

  7. Martha Locke (4 January, 1857 - 5 December, 1947) Lived in Aylesbury all her life and ran, with her sisters, a boarding school in Temple Square, Aylesbury. Never married

  8. Sarah Anne Locke (17 March, 1858 - 27 August, 1947) Lived in Aylesbury, never married.

  9. Letitia (Lily) Phoebe Locke (2 April, 1859 - 9 December 1954) Married Robert William Grace (6th June, 1861 - 11th June, 1921). No Children.

  10. John Gibbs Locke (16th August, 1860 - 1949) Emigrated to Australia where he married Mary Temby (1872 - 1913) and had two children. Living descendants.

  11. Robert William Locke (11 September, 1861 - 30 July, 1928) Lived in Aylesbury all his life as Brickmaker and Coal Merchant.  One time Mayor of Aylesbury. Married Edith Martha Watson (1863/4 - 1943) and had seven children: Living descendants

  12. Frances Rolls Locke (21 January, 1863-1938). Married Isaac Pugh (1869 - 1949), Congregational Minister in Torquay, and had one daughter. Line extinct.

  13. Alice Rebecca Locke (2 July, 1865 - 10 February 1866))

  14. Walter Richard Locke (28 July, 1867 - 17 June, 1957). Married  Bertha Louisa Baylis (29 January 1873 - 28 June 1964). Lived in Hemel Hempstead & St Albans and had 4 children. Living descendants.
