CUTTS, Buckland & Barnet, mid 19th century

August 2001

Mark of Southgate, London, says: I know Mary Button Cutts was born on 20th May 1829 in Buckland. Father was William born 26th July 1805, Mother was Mary Button born 6th December 1789. Mary Button Cutts gave birth to Charles Cutts on 11th April 1849 in Barnet, no father is mentioned. I believe that she was in service when Charles was born. We cannot find Mary Button Cutts or her mother and father in the 1851 census under Buckland. We would like to know where she was between 1829 and when she married Jesse Elliott in 1870 at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London. Indeed any information about those mentioned would be appreciated

You give no sources, and as you give dates of birth rather than baptism I guess you have access to some family source - as the Buckland register (according to familysearch) only gives baptismal dates - and birth dates prior to 1837 were not normally recorded in "official" records. The register shows that the were many Cutts in the area as in addition to Mary Button Cutts, baptised 20 May 1829. In particular there were children called Mary Cutts baptised in the parish in 1822 (daughter of another? William and Mary), 1828, 1830, 1831, 1832 and 1834 - so there will be plenty of opportunity for confusion from the official records.

Familysearch also suggests that Mary Button Cutts may have had siblings William (baptised 19th Feb 1831), Ann (baptised 24 Nov 1833) and Ruth (baptised 9 August 1835). The National Burial Index includes Buckland between 1800 and 1850 and none of the family appear to have died (although there are a large number of Cutts burials - including several of the Marys mentioned above.). So the absence from the parish in the 1851 census could suggest they had moved from the village by that date. Sometimes occupation is a clue to a person's movements - and William's occupation should be available from the register entry for Mary Button Cutts baptism in 1829 and from her marriage certificate in 1870 (which might also indicate whether he was deceased at that date.)

Clearly Mary Button Cutts was in Barnet in 1849, and her son George's birth certificate should include an address which would be worth checking Barnet in the 1851 census. Maybe there was a family link to John Cutts, who in 1850 (Post Office Directory) was a mealman (miller) in the High Street, Barnet..

If you can add to the information given above tell me.
