REED, Albury, circa 1800
September 2001
I understand that the baptism registers for Albury are included on the IGI (familysearch batch no C072011) between 1558 and 1875, and there are no entries for Read/Reed after the 16th century. As the index is known to contain errors you might like to check the microfilm of the registers around 1775-1800 and you should be able to book to do this at the nearest LDS Family History Centre to you, which I believe is at 3 Glen Court, Goonellabah, near Lismore, New South Wales, Phone: 02 6624 1317 - but check details on familysearch. At the same time you should check the marriage register for Bishops Stortford to see if it says what parish Thomas Reed came from at the time of his marriage.
It is possible that the LDS library can also supply microfilms of other Albury parish documents for the period - and old rate and overseers of the poor account books (if they still exist) could tell you if there was anyone called Reed living in the village when Thomas was said to be born.
Unfortunately the name Thomas Reed is not very distinctive (see Right Name, Wrong Body) and there were several possible candidates in Hertfordshire (and possibly more in nearby counties. For instance familysearch has a Thomas Read was baptised at Thorley (a few miles south east of Albury) in 1780 while Thomas Read was baptised at Anstey (a bit further away to the north) in 1786.In addition there is always the possibility that his parents were non-conformist and no record survives of his birth/baptism.
If you can add to the information given above tell me.
