TRIGG, The Pelhams, 19th century

October 2001

Haydn Cracknell of Albeta, Canada, says: According to the IGI Susan TRIGG was born in Brent Pelham in 1800. Susan had a son Thomas TRIGG b 1825. Susan married John BRADFORD in 1828. When Thomas TRIGG married his father was named as Thomas CHAPEL and he was living in Stocking Pelham at that time. I am really trying to find the ancestors of Susan TRIGG and a definitive birth date.

Have a look at The Limits of Familysearch. The information you have extracted from the IGI/familysearch is very dubious and should not be accepted as true without thorough checking. For instance one entry suggests that Susan Trigg was born in 1800 "of Brent Pelham" and that she married John Bradford - the source information indicating the data came from a "Patron Submission Sheet" This should be interpreted as:

"We have no idea when Susan was born (but it was probably not Brent Pelham or we would have found the entry in the baptismal register) but she was in Brent Pelham at the time of her marriage and we have age information which (if accurate) suggests that she was born somewhere around 1800."

The Patron Submitted entry for the baptism of Thomas Trigg on 26th June 1835 at Brent Pelham is a little better as presumably there is such an entry in the register (although I have found examples on the IGI where the name of the parish is wrong). However I suspect that it does not record the father's name as John Bradford - but rather does not name the father. It may well be that someone has assumed that the Susan that fathered Thomas Trigg is the same Susan that later married John Bradford three years later - and that therefore John Bradford must!!! be the father.

I assume that your Thomas Trigg is the one living at Crabs Green, Stocking Pelham, in the 1881 census:

He is very likely to be the Thomas Trigg baptised in Brent Pelham on 26th June 1825 - but you will need to check the microfilm of the registers to see what is actually recorded for his baptism.

The Susan Trigg who married John Bradford at Brent Pelham is most likely the widow boarding at Upper East End, Furneaux Pelham in the 1881 census:

This would suggest that she was born at Furneaux Pelham, rather than Brent Pelham, but perhaps the census enumerator simply put in one to many "ditto". As far as I can see the Furneaux Pelham baptismal register is indexed on familysearch and she is not listed. See Where is my ancestor's baptism before 1837?

It is perhaps worth noting that Robert Trigg was listed in the 1850 Post Office Directory for Hertfordshire as being a farmer and carrier of Stocking Pelham, running a cart to the Windmill, St Johns Street, London, every Thursday, returning on Saturday.

(I don't know where in Alberta you lived - but check familysearch to find your nearest LDS Family History Centre, where you can arrange to view the microfilms of parish registers, etc.)

If you can add to the information given above tell me.
