COVINGTON, (St Albans), mid 18th century

November 2001

Rose  Carey of Oregon says ... Supposedly my Covingtons/Covintons came from Hertfordshire according to what I have read. I'm not sure if James is the father of,  Arthur Covington, who md. 19 June, 1733, Mary Crouch, or if they are the parents of my Mary Catherine, b. Oct. 28 or Dec. 26, 1736 in St. Mary Bedford, England. She married  Oct. 1757, Hugh I. Ghormely or  Gormly, b. 2 March, 1732/33, in Tyrone county, Ulster, Ireland. Not sure if this son is a brother, Arthur Covington, b. 10 Aug. 1735. Mary C. (Covington) Ghormely, was a strict Presbyterian who tutored her ten kids. Their first child, son Abraham, b. 1758 in Ireland, and after arriving in America about 1759,  the rest were born in Pennsylvania, USA. ...

The link with Hertfordshire is vague, especially as you don't give sources. I find it worrying that some linked information on the IGI at familysearch relates to multiple submitted entries not backed up by the register transcription programme. Such information was often prepared by Americans many years ago, without the benefits of modern indexes, etc., and often with little understanding of English social conditions at the time. The number of problems such entries cause means that I normally assume a very great uncertainty and a high probability of error. In fact it is common to find that many people have copied the errors into their family trees without checking. (See The Dangers of Internet Genealogy.)

I don't know if this has happened in your case, and the information you supply may be perfectly correct, but your uncertainties about Mary Catherine Covington's birth date is worrying - and (in the absence of any source evidence)  the marriage of someone born in Bedfordshire marrying in Ireland is decidedly unusual - as the vast majority of the population stayed within a few miles of their birthplace. For this reason I don't feel I can spend much time on a detailed answer until you provide further information about your sources, their reliability, and the reasons for considering a link with Hertfordshire. You may find My Ancestors emigrated from Hertfordshire useful. However a couple of brief observations may be of help.

It should be noted that familysearch shows that at least three Mary Covington were born in the Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire area circa 1736. (Such clusters of people of the same name and age are not that uncommon - see Right Name, Wrong Body). One was in Bedford, baptised 28th October (so born earlier), and two were in St Albans (baptised 1st May and 30th January). Because the old calendar was in operation only the last could have been born on the 26th December date you give.

I cannot comment for Bedfordshire, but Presbyterianism was rare in Hertfordshire. In the 1851 religious census (see Religion in Hertfordshire) there was only on Presbytarian Chapel in the county - and that was in St Albans, and was founded in 1694. I have no information about whether there were any Covingtons associated with this chapel.
