Survey of the Royal Manor of Hitchin, 1676

DAY & PIGGOT (and others), HITCHIN, 1676

On the old forum 15 Feb 1999 Alan Collins said that "Solomon Day married Mary Piggot on 2/10/1711 at Hitchin" and asked where he was born. The following information from Survey of the Royal Manor of Hitchin, 1676 shows that there were people called Day and Pygott associated with Hitchin only a few years before Solomon Day was born.

James Chessam holds ... one cottage in Back Street lately of Thomas Day ...

George Draper holds ... ... and also posts, palings and barriers before the door of his messuages in Tilehouse Street and Bancroft Street in the tenure of the said George and of a certain William Kimpton and Christopher Pygott ...

Edward Day of Little Anstey [Little Almshoe] in the parish of Ippollitts, yeoman, holds of the lady of this mannor two acres and three roods of land in the fields of Hitchin namely, one acre in Gapeinghill Field in the furlong called Duckland, one and a half acres in Burford Field being the headland called Altonmeade Shot, and one rood also in Burford Field called 'le Cornerpeece', once the land of a certain John Day and now in the occupation of the same Edward by copy of the court rolls and fealty, suit to the court and he pays 1s 4d p.a.. Thomas Byde holds ... one and a half acres in Berrymeade, once of a certain John Day and lately of ... John Skynner ...

Thomas Pygott of Enfield in the county of Middlesex holds ... one building standing in front of his messuage in Angell Street alias St Maries Street, once in the occupation of Henry Warner and now in the occupation of Francis Berry ...

Susan Sampson, widow, holds ... one messuage ... called "le Beare" near the place called "le Bridgefoot' once of John Day, afterwards Lawrence Hurst, her husband deceased, and now ... of Susan and a certain Jeremy Rentham ...

William Wright holds ... four cottages ... one stands empty, and another three are in the separate occupation of Abraham Thomson, Thomas Day and Daniel Sanders ...

John Turner, son of John Turner, deceased holds ... one piece of land in Moormeade ... once of Luke Norton, esquire, afterwards of John Day, afterwards of Edward Day, afterwards of the aforesaid John Turner and now in the tenure of the aforesaid James [sic] ...

George Draper holds freely ... and also [plots in the fields of Hitchin] lately of a certain Edward DAY ... ... and also one messuage with outbuildings, yards, orchard, gardens and appurtenances thereto belonging sometimes calle 'le Stonehouse' in Bancroft, once of a certain Hurst and lately of Robert Draper, gentleman, his father deceased, and now in the occupation of Christopher Pygott ...

John Oney of Baldock, farmer, holds ... one cottage ... in Silver Street, once of John Oney, deceased, afterwards of William Oney, and now in the occupation of Henry Pygott ...
