The origins of St. Margaret's School date back to 1749 when a group of gentlemen founded a society for "maintaining and educating poor orphans of clergymen till of age to be put apprentice. In 1897 a new girls school was opened in a rural setting at Bushey, under Miss Baylee as headmistress. It is now an independent day and boarding school for 450 girls between 4 and 18.
