Teacher's Report

Activities over the last three months fall into two areas. Several areas have been updated in conjunction with the introduction of improved menus - and a number of the older pages have been flagged for updating to include references to changes in the availability of other online services.

In addition some new pages have been added to illustrate different forms of historical data that can be of use to the family and local historian. I was particularly excited by the answer to KINGHAM, Nash Mills, Abbots Langley, early 19th century which provides an excellent additional example for Right Name Wrong Body

Web Page Notes
Key Web Sites The Web Master has carried out a major re-organisation of how links to key web sites are handled, and this has meant some changes (including updates) to some of the pages which describe these sites. Non-trivial changes are indicated below: In addition a warning message has been added to many pages suggesting a visit to the web site to find out what facilities are currently available. See familysearch for an example of this message.)
Family Events Some of the pages have had few if any changes since the site was set up in 2001, and in places are out of date. The Web Master has created an menu for these pages, and amended the relevant linkages. Some minor changes to content have been made, but all pages accessed from the new menu will be reassessed and where necessary updated over the summer.
Family Records Centre Updated to report that the Centre in Myddleton Street has now closed. Page kept because many earlier answers suggest that people should visit the centre.
Herts County Council Improved description and links to Borough and District Councils now correct.
IGI Batch Numbers Links corrected - and access paths improved.
Right Name Wrong Body An excellent new example - A link has been added to KINGHAM, Nash Mills, Abbots Langley, early 19th century where it turns out that that Ann Kingham (born 1824, the daughter of Thomas & Sarah Kingham) was the aunt of Ann Kingham (born 1825, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Kingham). It demonstrates that even if the name, place and date in the register fits the person you are looking for there is no guarantee that it is the right person.
Old News: Garage Fire at St Albans This account of a major fire in a garage shows how one press account can provide background information on many topics, such as how the garage was organised, the limitations of the fire service, the involvement of the recently arrived Territorials, and the identity of two of the car owners whose cars were in the garage at the time. Detailed background notes have been added, together with a contemporary postcard of the incident.
St Albans Brickmakers Following the introduction of menus to help find the way around the following pages have been added or updated:
  • Bennett, W. G.: Extended the story from 1910 to 1946, with sample adverts, when the company was still making bricks, location unknown.
  • Owen, Joseph Fenwick: New extensive entry relating to the brick works set up to build Hill End Asylum - with additional information relating to the brick works Owen had as Ayot Green.
  • Vass, James: Added death in 1872 and some other family information from census data.
Ephemera: Hotel Menu The aim of the "Ephemera" section is to illustrate the range of interesting documents that may turn up among family records which can tell a story. I am intrigued by the idea of "Roast Pheasant and Chips" which was on the menu of the Rose and Crown Hotel, Watford. The menu was probably prepared for some celebration dinner - held on 27th October, 1909, so a look at the Watford Observer may provide a clue as to the nature of the celebration.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind The page on the long stay hospitals near St Albans has been updated to reflex the new page for Hill End Asylum, plus other picture links.
Family Trees & Histories This page, first set up in 2001 has been significantly revised to reflect the current situation.
