Harry Finch Reynolds Purchasing Remounts for the British Army |
|
During the First World War Harry Finch Reynolds joined the Royal Veterinary Corp, but the only family memorabilia that seems to have survived relating to his activities during trhe war are three large cards, each carrying a number of photographs, relating to the British Remount Commission (Canada) taken at the Calumet Park Depot, Hammond, Indiana, U.S.A.
Each card has a contemporary inscription and one of the cards cards has been backed by a page from the Chicago Sunday Herald dated January 9, 1916. The only other "location" information is that some of the pictures on Sheet 1 show a small building in the distance carrying the words "Lion Store", and Lion Store, Hammond, was a major department store in the area at the time.
For background information on buying remounts, including a chapter "Canada's Equine War Effort," see Horses in Society: A Story of Animal Breeding and Marketing, 1800-1920, by Margaret Elsinor Derry.
