Herts at War Exhibition

Letchworth Garden City

Visited October 2014

The Herts at War Exhibition currently occupies two shop in the Arcade, Letchworth Garden City which means that it can easily be seen by the many shoppers which pass this way who might well not have thought of going to a museum to see a special display, or visit a short-lived exhibition.

Clearly the window display with the machine gun and the two soldiers is eye catching - and there was a steady flow of visitors - and people stopping to look at the window displays when I was there,

It is currently open between 10am and 4pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and there was a steady flow of visitors - and people stopping to look at the window displays when I was there.

As you walked into the exhibition the wall in front display the ever-changing name of one of the local soldiers who died - while the adjacent map (click image for larger version) made you realise how many from Letchworth Garden City made the ultimate sacrifices.  Further biographical information was also available and the nearby draws included a wide range of memorabilia including letters and medals.

There were a number of excellent display boards and in addition to the above I particularly noted ones on conscientious objectors, zeppelins, military hospitals, and German colonies.

Upstairs there was a teaching room - and schools are encouraged to bring parties. On my visit they were showing

A County at War - Hertfordshire

There were also a very interesting and dramatic series of First World War paintings.

In addition there was the office where the Herts at War team are researching, and digitising, more about the way the First World War affected Hertfordshire, including the names on the County's many war memorials.

For more information about the activities of the Herts At War Project and the plans to move the exhibition to other towns in Hertfordshire.
