This is the earliest reference I have found to Tring in the British Newspaper Archive
In the mean time we have News of another Nature to aquaint you with, viz. On Friday last the Parish of Greenwich agreed at a Meeting there, to set up a Work-house in that Place for employing the Poor; Sir John Jennings and Sir Gregory Page having resolved to be at the sole Charge of repairing some Houses and building others fit for that Purpose. This is done agreeable to a Clause in a late Act of Parliament, and after the Example of several Towns in Hertfordshire, particularly Walford, Tring, and Berkingstead and Ailesbury in Buckinghamshire; where by erecting Workhouses, the Poor Rate of the said Places is reduced to above one Third.
