The Apsley 'A' Football Team in 1901-2

With them is Christopher Henry Hawkins, publican of The Salmon, Apsley - the football ground being Salmon Meadow.

For more information about the club see

The Football Club, Apsley, 1885-1935

As the team is wearing a different strip to the later pictures of the Apsley Club team. and all the players so far identified could be employees of J. Dickinson this may be an internal company team rather than the village team.

The Identity of G. F. Seabrook

Genealogy type searches for G. F. Seagrave drew a complete blank. However the following suggests an explanation:

  • In 1881 James Seagrave (44, labourer at paper works, born Harpenden) and his wife Mary (34, born Aberdeen) were living at Two Waters, Hemel Hempstead with their nephew, Grorge F McKay (10, scholar, born Dublin).

  • They were all together in 52, Apsley End in 1891, with James Seagrave a boxmaker and George F. McKay a clerk in an envelope factory.

  • In 1901 Michael McKay (27?, born Ireland, envelope packer) was staying with his brother George Frederick McKay (29, born Dublin, Ireland, clerk in card factory) in Weymouth Street, Apsley. George was married to Elizabeth (25, born Hemel Hempstead), there were three children aged 4, 2 and 9 months, all born in Hemel Hempstead). Aunt Mary Seagrave (54, widowed, born Aberdeen, Scotland) also present.

  • George, with a bigger family, and Aunt Mary, were still at 53 Weymouth Street in 1911. George was describes as a manufacturing stationer's clerk at the paper mill.

Draft Research Note

This web site includes many online pages, a number of draft offline pages which required more research, and yet more pictures, etc. awaiting detailed research. In July 2016 it was decided that it would be more helpful to other researchers if this information was put online quickly - rather than waiting indefinitely for the planned research to be carried out.

The original plan for this page was to  provide more detailed biographies on all these footballers, and to supplement the page with press cuttings from the Hemel Hempstead Gazette (the key years are not yet on the British Newspaper Archive). If even more time was available the research could have been extended to the early history of the club, using the other material on
