It appears to have been a small and short-lived private school. In 1908, 1914 and 1922 (but not 1926) St Katharines, New Bushey, is listed as a private house, with Miss Ellen Burge living there, and it is only in 1912 that Kelly's Directory for Hertfordshire that the following trade listing occurs: |
Burge & Hilder (Misses), school, St Katharine's, Aldenham Road, New Bushey |
Ellen S. W. Burge (1866-1946) was the daughter of Charles William Burge (a builder) and his wife Margaret. By 1890 Charles had moved with his family to Bushey, where he lived at Richmond House, Aldenham Road, New Bushey with the family, including Ellen who was described as a teacher in 1891, but no occupation was given in 1901. |
Edith Julia Louise Hilder (1864-1943) was the daughter of John and Julia Hilder, who had at least seven children. The family moved to Friern Barnet, Middlesex in about 1869, where her father was a linen draper. The family had moved to St Leonard on Sea, Hastings, Sussex, by 1881, where Edith's eldest sister was a teacher, but Edith was not at home. In 1891 Edith was a school governess living with her widowed father, John Hilder (a retired draper), living in Battersea, London. In 1901 Edith was a governess at a girls school, with some boarders, with at Worthing run by Miss Eunice Yerbury |
