Datchworth Church Interior

ß A Pilgrimage in Hertfordshire, 1931

This attractive church was visited in September 2004 and is situated in a rural situation outside the village, with fields alongside. The graveyard is well kept and there are a fair number of older tombstones in their original position.

The brief history is a single sheet of A4 and states that the church was originally dedicated to St Mary Magdalene. The Nave was built in the 12th century and had a north arcade of four bays. The North Aisle is late 14th century with a 15th century window at the east end. The lower part of the tower is 15th century, but the spire was only added in 1875. The porch is 16th century and the Chancel was remodelled at the end of the same century. The rood screen and reredos are 20th century.
