Elstree High Street The public house on the left is The Plough. Beyond it, approximately where the horse can be seen was the Green Dragon public house. The trees hide the entrance to the Elstree Congregational Chapel, built in 1876.

High Street, Elstree Known used in 1904 At the Town centre crossroads. The parish of Elstree is on the right, that of Aldenham on the left, while the county of Middlesex is behind you. The public house on the right with the trap outside it is The Red Lion. It was first recorded in 1656, in the 19th century it was a coaching inn, and it was demolished in 1936. Elstree School Elstree School (Rev. Lancelot Saunderson M.A. proprietor; Rev. Edgar Stogion M.A. head master) Elstree Hill. Hill House was built in 1779 and served as a boys school from at least 1847 until 1939, when it moved to Berkshire on the outbreak of the Second World War. It is now a nursing home. |

London Road This runs along the line of the old Roman Road called Watling Street. At the start of the 20th century the road surface was still rammed gravel, clay and sand. |
