Received ^the 22 Day of May 1782 or Mr Jn^o Hill Thirty Pounds in full for the Purches Money for an Estate Sold him situate at Bendish in the Parish of S^t Palues Walden in the County of Hertford by the Mark of Mr Will^m X Smart

An examination of the Militia list for St Pauls Walden at the time shows that living in the parish there was:

• A labourer called William Hill (who at least for some of the time lived at Bendish)

• A carpenter called John Hill

• A farmer called John Lines

• A farmer called John Nicholas
