The Rye House

An engraving of the old gatehouse at Rye House, made for the book "The Beauties of England and Wales" in 1807.
In 1443, Sir Andrew Ogard was granted a licence by Henry VI to "impark and fortify the Maner of Rye". The gatehouse is all that remains of the house that Ogard built.
Talk: The oldest example of a brick building in England is Little Wenham Hall, Norfolk, built in 1260 and The Rye House gateway is the oldest surviving example of a brick building in Hertfordshire.
