The Rye House

One of the Earliest Hertfordshire Brick Buildings - 1443

An engraving of the old gatehouse at Rye House, made for the book "The Beauties of England and Wales" in 1807.

In 1443, Sir Andrew Ogard was granted a licence by Henry VI to "impark and fortify the Maner of Rye". The gatehouse is all that remains of the house that Ogard built.

Talk: The oldest example of a brick building in England is Little Wenham Hall, Norfolk, built in 1260 and The Rye House gateway is the oldest surviving example of a brick building in Hertfordshire.
