Coprolites

"Fossilised Dinosaur Dung"

Coprolites were mined in Bedfordshire and adjacent counties, including the very north of Hertfordshire. They contained a high level of phosphorous and where made into fertilizer.

In Hertfordshire the main deposits were in Ashwell and Hinxworth.

For a very useful background to the subject see the extensive account of the parish of Everton, near Sandy, Bedfordshire, which includes significant information on, and further web links to, coprolites and the relevant geology. The original web site has been deleted but a version is still available on web.archive.org.

The Coprolite Industry in Buckinghamshire in Records of Buckinghamshire Volume 32 (1990) contains information on Puttenham. (see Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society web site).
