The artist is sitting near St Stephen's Church with St Stephen's Hill dropping away in the foreground. Along the skyline one can see, from left to right, the Abbey gateway, the Abbey (with its spire, removed before 1850), the Clock Tower and in the distance the tower of St Peter's Church. The road climbing the hill is Holywell Hill and the River Ver runs from left to right along the valley bottom.
