St Albans & District Council

Page needs checking and modification

This site covers the area served by the modern council, which includes the City of St Albans and the surrounding towns and villages.

While this site does not have a specific "history" page a number of historic places are covered by the "Places to Visit" page. The "Walks and Tours" page includes details of guided walks through the historic parts of the city, and there is information about the museums - although when last checked the list of events was not up to date.

The following is the entry for the "Kingsbury Watermill" on the "Places to Visit" page

Close to Verulamium Park is Kingsbury Watermill, St Michael's Street. Identified on this site in the Domesday Book, the present building was constructed in the sixteenth century. Its beautifully restored water-wheel churns the clear water of the Ver and visitors can see the milling machine, a selection of farming implements and an exhibition area. A delightful restaurant forms part of the mill and visitors can enjoy a range of sweet and savoury waffles. Facilities include a gift shop, toilets and car park. Admission: Prices upon application. Telephone (01727) 853502 Opening Hours: Tues - Sat 11.00am - 6.00pm Sun - 12.00noon - 6.00pm

Having visited the Mill, and enjoyed both looking round, and the refreshments, I can say it is well worth a visit - particularly if your ancestors were millers and you want to find out more about how water mills worked.

The Shrine of St Alban

A good site, with a detailed plan where you can click for details, photographs, and a potted history. Well worth a visit if your ancestors used the Abbey Church - and a must if you are planning to visit St Albans and are deciding what to see.
