Introduction
Genealogy in Hertfordshire is an educational site that has been created to help and advice people who are researching local and family history relating to the county of Hertfordshire, and with the subsidiary aim of raising money to help the mentally ill who live in Hertfordshire and elsewhere.
It was set up with a couple of hundred pages in 2001 and since then has grown steadily, and by the end of 2008 it had expanded to over 2500 text pages and 5000 image files. To help you find your way around the information is subdivided into a number of "Topic areas" and there are a number of "Menus". At the present time the topics and menus are being modified to improve the service and it may be some time before every topic and page conforms to the following arrangements.
General Screen Layout
The basic layout throughout this web site (with the exception of the Find It, Ask Chris, and Tell Me pages) is to have a scrolling "Menu" on the left hand side of the page and a major "Content" area which contains the subject matter of this web site.
Content Layout (New)
Recently updated pages (such as this one) will have one or two yellow boxes at the top of the page containing a topic logo and clicking on the logo will load the appropriate Topic Home page and menu. This page is part of the Guide - and is also one of the special pages which "belongs" to the Web Master, who is responsible for general support facilities and the design of the web site.
There will then be a page title followed by text and pictures, usually arranged so they will expand to fill the width of your screen. Text in blue represent links. Pictures framed in blue are also links.
Finally there will usually a line relating to the page update history.
Content Layout (Old)
While all existing menus now include topic logos there are (Xmas 2008) well over 2000 content pages which need to given their logos. These are being updated but it will take time before all are brought in line with the new layout.
For older pages pages the top line (usually boxed if there is a dedicated menu) is a text link back to the introductory page for the Topic.
There will then be a page title followed by text and pictures, usually arranged so they will expand to fill the width of your screen. Text in blue represent links. Pictures framed in blue are also links.
In some cases there will be a list of boxed pictorial links on the right hand side of the page to, for example, a relevant Wikipedia entry. (This information is covered by the new menus.)
At the bottom of the page there is a boxed link back to the site Home Page followed by a line relating to the page update history.
Menus
The left hand window holds the current menu. All menus provide access back to the site home page, to the current topic page, and help and support routines. In addition there is a variable sized "drop-down" menu of relevant links, and in many cases there are facilities to swop between alternative drop down menus. For more information see Menu Layout.
Navigation - Principle Topics
When you start exploring this site the important topics to recognise are Home Page, Guide. Family Events, Census Returns, Subject Index, Key Web Sites, Tutorial, Help Desk, Places in Hertfordshire, Books on Hertfordshire, Maps and Webmaster. For more information see Site Map.
