Marriage 1816
Marriage Registers from 1754 to 1837
Before Civil
Registration there is no official register to record births (as opposed
to baptisms) and it is harder to find the mother's maiden name. We know
from James's baptism (view)
that his parents are Thomas Alfred Horwood
and Elizabeth and from the 1851
census (view)
that Elizabeth was born in St
Albans, Hertfordshire. Task: Find where the marriage took place, and Elizabeth's maiden name. |
Familysearch was used to find the marriage, using the following parameters:
First Name | Thomas |
Last Name | Horwood |
Spouse | Elizabeth |
Event | Marriage |
Year | 1818 |
Year Range | 2 |
The following marriage was located:
THOMAS ALFRED HORWOOD
ELIZABETH LEWIN
08 APR 1818 Abbey, Saint Albans
This is, of course, only a partial transcript of the original register, and to get the full information it is necessary to consult the parish register. This is available on microfilm at HALS (at Hertford), at the St Albans Central Library, worldwide through the Later Day Saints Family History Libraries (see familysearch for addresses) and almost certainly at a number of major genealogical libraries. The following was obtained during a visit to Hertford.
Thomas Alfred Horwood
of the Parish |
Thomas comes from the parish of St Botolph, Aldergate, which is where the couple's eldest son was baptised (view) while Elizabeth Lewin comes from St Albans, where she was born (view). They were married by licence [and a check will be made to see if the licence survives, and if so what it says.]
With the parish registers the signatures are original, unlike those on the copies from the General Register Office. While most of the witnesses are probably relatives Thomas Brown was the parish clerk, and witnessed many of the marriages in the register around this date. This is one of the reasons why you should look at the marriage register entries adjacent to the one you want, to pick up, and eliminate, an "official" witness who is almost certainly not a relative.
Result of
Investigation
A very satisfactory result, with Thomas Alfred Horwood being shown as being from the City of London, and Elizabeth Lewin being a Hertfordshire girl from St Albans. An overview of the session appears on the next page. |
