What happened to

William Lewin and his family?

In about 1790 John Lewin (senior) wrote

William Lewin the third Son of John & Sarah Lewin was Born July 2 : 1787

On the 18th November 1822 an affidavit was signed

I do hearby Certify that the above is the handwriting of John Lewin, formerly of the Abbey Mills in the Parish of St Albans in the County of Hertford and that William Lewin now of Holywell Hill in the same parish is the person alluded to in the above Register as the third son of Joh & Sarah Lewin.

On the 25th July 1857 John Lewin (junior) wrote

William Lewin the third son of John and Sarah Lewin Died at Harpenden May 1852.

Under Construction

We know that William was born in 1787 and died at Harpenden, Herts in 1852

Task: Locate William in the 1851 census using Ancestry.

1851 Census - Turnpike Road, Harpenden

William Lewin Head 63 retired grocer St Albans
Elizabeth Lewin Wife 70 Watford
Ann Trupell Servant, Widow 38 House Servant Hatfield

Next Door

Joseph Lewin Head 31 grocer & druggist employing 2 St Albans
Sarah Lewin Wife 27   London
Francis Lewin Son 1   Harpenden
Jonas Winterbone Servant 34 Assistant Druggist London
Elizabeth Hants Servant 19 House Servant Southwark, London

Note that the age of Francis Lewin is ambiguous in the original image and has been transcribed as 7 but I read it as probably 1.

The second household alerts us to the fact that on the 25th July 1857 John Lewin (junior) wrote (view)

Elizabeth the Fourth Daughter of John and Sarah Lewin Married Tho Horwood of Newgate Market and had the following family ...

Sarah Lewin as she is now as she Married Jos Lewin of Harpenden where she is now living Born Jany 25 1822
