 Fogmore, Kings Walden

July 2002

Barbara Brenchley (jandawood @t ozemail.com.au) of Aldinga Beach, South Australia, writes:  On my ggrandmother's birth certificate her place of birth is given as 'Fogmore, Kings Walden'.   I assume that in 1853, Kings Walden would have been a village so I am wondering if "Fogmore' is the name of a house.  I cannot find any reference to it anywhere and wondered if you had any local knowledge?   My ggrandmother's name was Harriet Thrussell b. 28.3.1853.   Thank you.
Great website, by the way!

The area of Kings Walden known as Fogmore/Frogmore seems to relate back to a Fogenham fyeld recorded in about 1270. Because of its location high and away from any stream The Place-Names of Hertfordshire suggest the that the name may be related to an early personal name Focga. It is shown as Frogmore End on Dury & Andrew's 1766 map. The 1881 census list a number of labourer's households at Fogmore and Fogmore End - served by two public houses, The Fox and The Jolly Sailor. It is shown as Frogmore and Frogmore Bottom on modern maps such as the online multimap.
