The Introduction of this booklet reads: Having
published the book "St
Albans 1650-1700: A Thoroughfare Town and its People"
the Seventeenth Century Research Group of the
St Albans & Hertfordshire Architectural & Archaeological Society
is continuing its research by examining family histories and specific aspects
of life in St Albans at that time.
Reading the will of Roger Pemberton, the authors of this booklet were fascinated by the meticulous detail with which he laid down the terms of his bequest of the almshouses in St Peter's Street. When Roger died in 1627 he bequeathed the land, in what was then known as Bowgate, and funds for the building of almshouses for the occupation of six poor widows. Would it ever have crossed his mind that the houses he envisaged would still be in use, very little changed and occupied by similar residents, 400 years later?
