Edited by David Shirley
Published by Egon Publishers, Letchworth, 1978
Hardback, 184 pages - with illustrations, maps, tables, etc
Hertfordshire has much to offer in historical interest, architecture, fine landscape, natural history and rich countryside for quiet enjoyment, recreation and study. This book has been compiled both for the visitor and for those who live in the county. A series of illustrated essays describe the many features and' activities which have shaped the modern countryside. The main themes are of man and nature in the landscape: the importance of farming; the industrial influences; the landscape architects; the ancient craftsmen and their modern counterparts. These are depicted against a background of the geology, soils and weather, and of the variety of wildlife habitats which with their innumerable plants, birds, mammals and insects depend largely upon us for their conservation. The Countryside Directory is for those who wish to leave their armchairs for a more active investigation of the county. It provides information about the many organisations which are concerned with Hertfordshire's countryside: the statutory bodies; the voluntary organisations; the natural history and archaeological societies. It gives details of places to visit: parks; nature reserves; nature trails; museums; houses and gardens.
