These detail memoires were written by Captain George S Gregory when he was in his seventies and relate to his experiences in the Great War while serving, initially at least, with the Hertfordshire Regiment. The account starts with breaking camp at Ashridge, where the Hertfordshire Regiment was training when war broke out. The account then follows his movements with chapters
1 | Hertfodshire Regiment 1914-1918 | 7 | O.C.Bn. to joining Battalion France
2 | Ypres - Richebourg St. Vaast | 8 | Somme 1918 to Conclusion of War
3 | Ecole des Juenes Filles up to Festubert Relief | 9 | The Armistice
4 | Leaving 2nd Division. Going to 39th to Leave for the Somme | 10 | After the War, 1919 Onwards
5 | Goodbye Somme | 11 | France and Belgium revisited, 1971
6 | The Salient 1916-1917 |
This is a well-written account of his experiences, and for those whose ancestors were members of the Hertfordshire Territorials when war broke out, this paints a vivid picture of their experiences.
