The first census transcript to become available was the 1881 Census and this page was originally prepared to show one way in which the CD could be processed.

1881 Census

The Red Lions of Hertfordshire

A search was made of the 1881 census CD (Greater London Region Disc 4), using the Resource File Viewer 3.02 for "Red Lion" & Hertford". There were 154 "hits" but many could be eliminated because they contained "Red Lion" in the address or were in other counties but had someone from Hertfordshire in residence. Examination of the entries revealed the following 35 "Red Lion" establishments - where either the head of household had a relevant occupation or there were lodgers in residence. In Berkhamsted there were many people living in "Red Lion Yard" but the "Red Lion" itself was not picked up and perhaps it had closed? There may well have been other "Red Lion" which were not recorded by name in the dwelling place field.

In July 2004 Eddie drew my attention to a much later (1954) reference to a Red Lion at Berkhamsted,  and said the Red Lion Yard (but not the inn) is shown on the 1897 O/S map, and suggests that the Red Lion was roughly opposite the Town Hall, in the High Street. The 1881 census shows about 23 households in the Yard, one of which - surname DAVIS - I am interested in, so any info. that comes up will be welcome. A check of the 1866 Post Office Directory lists S. Ivory as being the landlord of the Red Lion High Street, Berkhamsted. The 1882 Kelly's Directory which shows that 43 were listed in Hertfordshire, including the Red Lion, Potten End, Great Berkhamsted, which is not listed in the above table.

Paul W Tubb (paulsen @t pwtubb.fsnet.co.uk) writes: Came across this site by way of Google search for the name EASTERBEE - my wife's maiden name - and found the reference to Benjamin, her great grandfather, during his tenure of the Red Lion at the time of the 1881 census.

The family were Londoners and we are still not sure how a career with horses [as groom, stableman etc] in London brought him and his family to Welwyn as a licensee. Incidentally his youngest child was born in Welwyn whilst they were there and it was this link which led us to the 1881 census initially.

The main road through Redbourn was one of the most important roads leading north out of London, and its inns provide the equivalent of the modern motorway service station, with food and accommodation for the human traveller, and feed and stabling for the horses, often with smiths and wheelwrights, etc. based in the inn's yard, to deal with accidents and breakdowns. See Coaches and Inns, Redbourn, 1830's which mentions the Red Lion as part of this trade. By 1881 there would have been a considerable decrease in long distance horse traffic due to the coming of the railways and and it is not surprising if someone who entered the inn trade looking after horses became a licensee as the trade restructured to fit the changing demands.

Kathryn Dickson nee Davis (grahame @t dickson.citrusred.es) writes from Spain: You state that Eddie is interested in the Davis family living in Red Lion Yard, Berkhamsted. I am a descendant and wonder what more you want to know? How can I help?

For some reason Eddie's contact details are missing, so I cannot contact him. I am therefore posting the message here in the hope that he will see it.

WARREN, Barley, Little Hormead & Great Hadham, 1850-1890

George Tait (gtait @t activ8.net.au) of Mandurama, NSW, Australia, writes: Your page recorded  the Red lion Inn Gt Hadham with my Gt Grandfather Henry Edward Warren as the Lic'd Victualer.  You may be interested in some information of Henry Edward Warren.

Henry was the son of Nathan Warren a builder at Barley Herts. Henry was born at Barley in 1842. In 1856, Nathan purchased the Little Hormead Bury with the 360 acre estate to which he then moved with his family including Henry Edward. Nathan died in 1862 after which Henry, then 20 years of age took over the Estate pending it's eventual sale and distribution among the children including Henry.

In 1870, Henry married Elizabeth Tofts. After the death of Henry's mother, the Little Hormead Bury was sold from which Henry received a substantial payment. In c.1880 Henry purchased the Red Lion Inn at Gt Hadham where he moved with his wife and 3 children.  A fourth daughter, Elizabeth Catherine was born a the Red Lion in 1882 who was to become my Australian maternal Grandmother.

After 8 years as Licensee, Edward became ill with suspected TB. In 1890 he sold the Inn and arranged to migrate to Sydney Australia in the hope that the warmer climate and sunshine would improve his health.  Edward, Elizabeth and their 4 children settled on a farm estate at Campbelltown some 30km SW of Sydney. Henry lived a further 8 years in Australia before he died aged 55 in 1899.

His wife Elizabeth Snr remarried in 1905 to John Jones of Canowindra NSW, where she then lived with her Daughter Elizabeth Junior where she then met John Jones' nephew Ernest JonesElizabeth Junior and Ernest Jones were married in 1907 an lived all their life at Canowindra NSW. Elizabeth (Warren) and Ernest Orton Jones are my maternal grandparents.  They both passed away in 1945, but now have descendants spread over many parts of Australia,

If you can add information on Hertfordshire Red Lions, please tell me.
