Publisher: Charles Martin, 39 Aldermanbury, London E.C. No 2130 Date: circa 1903 (Inland message)
Resuming the North Road, we pass through the little Village of Stapleford, about three miles from Hertford, where is a small ancient Church with a wooden tower, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which was renovated, and a new vestry built, in 1862; in 1875 a new spire was placed on the tower, and the Church otherwise repaired. The living is a Rectory, in the patronage of Abel Smith, Esq., M.P., the annual value being £300 per annum, with a residence; the present Incumbent is the Rev. Dr. Barclay. The Parish Register dates from 1558. There is an excellent Training School for twelve girls, supported by the ladies of the Smith family, and also a National School. The number of acres in Stapleford is 1319, and the population 249. At the adjoining Hamlet of Bull's Mill, there was formerly a Mansion called Benwick Hall, which has been pulled down.
