The St Albans Treadmill for pumping water

There would have been a number of deep wells in various parts of St Albans, including Bernards Heath. For instance in 1857 a well associated with a public house in the Hatfield Road needed a 140 foot long well rope.  A hand-dug well would need to be at least 5 feet in diameter.

We know the brickmaker Benjamin Fowler dug the well at the House of Correction in St Albans in 1822 so had he already dug one on Bernards Heath for use in his brickworks?
