History of Bernards Heath
During the Second Battle of St Albans it would appear that the Yorkist Army expected the Lancastrians to approach St Albans along the roads from the North and North East. They set up their main defensive positions on Bernards Heath, where the massive Iron Age Ditch called Beech Bottom formed a natural defensive feature. Unfortunately for them, they were outflanked by the Lancastrians, who came via Redbourn, rather then Harpenden or Wheathampstead.
