The Road Through Harpenden |
Oliver's Map of Hertfordshire
1695
Map: edited from Oliver 1695 - From Four County Maps of
Hertfordshire
It would seem that since early times the main road north from St Albans was Watling Street, the old Roman road to Dunstable. The first reference to a regular coach between London and St Albans was in 1637. (John Taylor’s Carriers Cosmographie)
At about the time this map was surveyed Joseph Marshall, Coachman, of St Albans, ran a coach between Luton and the Cock in Aldgate, London. It left Luton on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, returning on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. (from a work called The Present State of London by de Laune, published in 1681, according to Frank Kilvington, private communication.)
