The Hertfordshire Yeomanry go to War
The Hertfordshire Yeomanry on camels in Egypt
When this Territorial Force unit was set up in 1908, recruits from St Albans would have joined C Squadron, with its drill hall at Harpenden. The squadron also served Hemel Hempstead, Radlet and Redbourn.
When the war broke out the Hon. Arthur Holland-Hibbert was appointed government horse buyer and went at once to Tring Show - where he brought the pick of the considerable number being exhibited. Starting on the 8th August the regiment started its move to war stations in Essex. On the 10th September they set out for Egypt, arriving in Alexandria on 25th September. Here their duties were to defend the Suez Canal and they replaced a regular division which was needed for action with the British Expeditionary Force in France. The regiment later saw action at a number of locations in the Middle East, including Gallipoli.
