Bygrave Indentures, St Albans, 18th century

This is a complete listing, in date order, of the indentures that were sold on ebay in the Autumn of 2001 and which prompted me to write the web page What happened to that vital record?

1705 Vellum Indenture. St.Albans. CLEMENT
This handwritten indenture is on a single sheet of vellum and is dated 24th November 1705. It is between William Blythman and Richard Clement. The document concerns properties within the town of St. Albans. There are 2 sixpenny revenue stamps. On the reverse there are some witness signatures. Size- The document is approx. 77cm wide x 70cm high. In good condition with the usual folding creases and a couple of small holes.

1708 Vellum Indenture. St.Albans.CLEMENT BIGG
This handwritten indenture is on a double sheet of vellum and is dated 16th July 1708. It is between Richard Clement, William Blythman and Elizabeth Bigg. The document concerns properties within the town of St. Albans. There are 2 sixpenny revenue stamps on each sheet, and 2 red wax seals. On the reverse there are some witness signatures. Size - The document is approx. 82cm wide x 65cm high. In good condition with the usual folding creases.

1710 Vellum Indenture. St.Albans. TULL, BYGRAVE
This handwritten indenture is on a single sheet of vellum and is dated 16th January 1710. It is between Henry Tull, Edward Byrgrave and Thomas Ivory(?). The document concerns properties within the town of St. Albans. There are 2 sixpenny revenue stamps and 3 red wax seals. On the reverse there are some witness signatures. Size- The document is approx. 89cm wide x 71cm high. In good condition with the usual folding creases and a couple of small holes. This is a potentially very rare item. According to 'The Impressed Revenue Stamps of Great Britain' 1981 by Frank, Schonfield and Barber, this is the earliest known record of use of this type of revenue!

1727 Vellum Indenture. St.Albans. BYGRAVE
This handwritten indenture is on a single sheet of vellum and is dated 25th March 1727. It is between Edward Bygrave and Edward Byegrave his son! The document concerns properties within the town of St. Albans. There are 3 sixpenny revenue stamps and 1 red wax seal. On the reverse there are some witness signatures. Size- The document is approx. 80cm wide x 53cm high. In good condition with the usual folding creases.

This handwritten indenture is on a single sheet of vellum and is dated 2nd August 1731. It is between Edward Bygrave, John Rudd and John Iremonger. The document concerns properties within the town of St. Albans. There are 3 sixpenny revenue stamps and 3 red wax seals. On the reverse there are some witness signatures, including . Size. The document is approx. 90cm wide x 78cm high. In good condition with the usual folding creases.

1734 Vellum Indenture. St.Albans. BYGRAVE
This handwritten indenture is on a double sheet of vellum and is dated 27th September 1734. It is between Edward Bygrave, Anne Fothergill and Richard Smiths. The document concerns properties within the town of St. Albans. There are 3 sixpenny revenue stamps on each sheet and 3 red wax seals. On the reverse there are some witness signatures. Size- Each sheet of the document is document is approx. 71cm wide x 54cm high.

1735 Vellum Indenture. St.Albans. BYGRAVE
This handwritten indenture is on a double sheet of vellum and is dated 2nd August 1735. It is between Edward Bygrave, John Rudd and Anne Fothergill. The document concerns properties within the town of St. Albans. There are 3 sixpenny revenue stamps on each sheet and 3 red wax seals. On the reverse there are some witness signatures.

1735 Paper Indenture. St.Albans. BYGRAVE
This handwritten indenture is on a single sheet of paper and is dated 26th September 1735. It is between Edward Bygrave and Anne Hothergill. The document concerns properties within the town of St. Albans. There are 3 impressed sixpenny revenue stamps and 3 red wax seals. On the reverse there are some witness signatures. Size. The document is approx. 55cm wide x 32cm high. In good condition with the usual folding creases, and a couple of tiny tears.

1826 Vellum Indenture. St.Albans.SANDERS
This handwritten indenture is on a double sheet of vellum and is dated 31st October 1826. It is between William Smith, Stephen Smith, Joseph Russel and Thomas Fairthorne. The document concerns properties within the town of St. Albans. The first sheet has a blue Three Pound revenue stamp, and the second a One Pound one. There are four red wax seals. On the reverse there are some witness signatures. Size- The document is approx. 77cm wide x 60cm high. In good condition with the usual folding creases.

Simon Fairthorne (fairthorne @t iclway.co.uk) writes one of the names in the 1826 document is Thomas Fairthorne. He was a solicitor, born in Wiltshire, started his career in Hackney, moved to St Albans and later emigrated to Australia. He had a large family, almost all of whom survived past childhood. Although not a direct ancestor of mine, we are related and I have a large amount of information about him if you should ever need it
