Suzanne has has drawn attention to the following book: Bishop's Stortford and Sawbridgeworth in Old Photographs by W. J. Wright (published by Budding Books in 2001 - many second hand copies available).
The First Surrey Rifles were based in the town in 1915, in Hatters Croft and the Red House, Bell Street.
Suzanne has drawn my attention to the extremely interesting web site which deals with the History of the Sawbridgeworth Fire Brigade. It includes extensive information (including images of original manuscript log books, etc). It is an excellent example of a specialised local history site, which concentrates on a single organisation.
