As the population of St Albans grew more water was needed and a new well was dug. The original steam engine used to pump the water has now been replaced by an electric pump and as far as I know the well is still in use. What is interesting is that a well of this size, under a rubbish filled brick pit, could explain a crater as big as the one in Fontmell Close. So was there a deep well on the site?
