Indentures

The original indenture was a deed between two or more parties written on a single sheet of paper or parchment. An indented line was drawn between the different parts and the document cut along the wavy line, each party taking a part. This meant that, at a time when most people could not read, it was possible to demonstrate that two documents were part of the same deed by matching the wavy cut.

Later the term was used to refer to any sealed agreement between two or more parties.
