What happened to Francis Lewin and his family?
Francis Lewin's Marriage
The 1851 census (view)
has
told us that Francis appears to have married
Sarah L. [surname
unknown] from Lamington, Warwickshire before about 1821 Task: Try and locate the marriage using familysearch. |
Search for Francis Lewin's marriage to a Sarah between 1810 and 1830
Three Francis Lewen/Lewin are recorded but there is only one to a Sarah.
FRANCIS LEWIN Marriages: Spouse: SARAH ROBBINS Marriage: 18 AUG 1815 Bishops Tachbrook, Warwick, England Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record. Source Information: Batch No.: Dates: Source Call No.: Type: Printout Call No.: Type: M039911 1806 - 1837 0560712 Film NONE |
In the 1851 census (view) Sarah is stated to have been born at Lamington, Warwickshire, and a search for "Lamington" on multimap produced nowhere of that name in England. However a search for "Bishops Tachbrook" was positive and showed that it was a couple of miles south of Royal Leamington Spa.
In theory one should now look at a microfilm of the parish register of Bishops Tachbrook to check if (a) Francis Lewin was a bachelor or a widower and (b) what parish he came from. and in particular whether he is recorded as being from St Albans. However this checking can safely be left until later.
Result of
Investigation
On the reasonable assumption that "Lamington" refers to what is now known as Royal Leamington Spa, this marriage index entry is an excellent fit, and Francis's wife was Sarah Robbins. This raises the question of why Francis should marry a woman from Warwickshire, and suggests that the Lewin family may have had wide connections. |
