Some Contemporary Artists of 'F S' G G Weiderseim |
|
Grace Gebbie (1877-1936) married Thomas Weiderseim in 1900 and later married William Drayton in 1911. She was an illustrator of children's books, comic strips, fashion pages, and magazine covers. She is considered to be one of the first and most successful American female cartoonists. [Wikipedia] Her work is of interest here because her output included post cards of children with round faces, plump bodies, and rosy cheeks, similar to those in the advertisements she did for Campbells soup from about 1904. Her post cards were marketed in England by J. Beagles & Co as early as March 1908, and clearly predate similar cards by Fred Spurgin and other artists. |

It is not known the date of the first post cards but similar uncoloured prints of children are known published in 1906 by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York |
